TRAINING ROOM

DISTRIBUTION CENTERS

OVERVIEW

Large, fully enclosed spaces designed to accommodate various training purposes. Training rooms are multi-functional, offering configurable flexibility for different group sizes and learning styles.

Flexibility is achieved through adaptable design elements like bi-fold partitions or doors and movable furniture, supported by storage and AV solutions.

Design Goals

  • Locate with Office Space or Shared Spaces, with easy access from the Shopfloor, as well as access to collaborative settings.
  • Place adjacent to food operations to facilitate training breaks, ideally near the Fuel Station, Foodhall, or Restrooms.
  • Provide flexibility to room size with ability to reconfigure layouts and room size as needed to accommodate different group sizes and learning styles.
  • Ensure ample furniture storage nearby for easy room layout changes.

Branding

These areas prioritize functional needs, such as dry-erase boards, pinnable surfaces, and versatile furniture configuration, to support training and group work. However, color selection and simple graphics can subtly carry storytelling references from adjoining spaces.

Consider adding simple brand treatments on walls that may serve as a virtual meeting backdrop, taking care not to impair the visibility and legibility of whiteboard content. Artful overhead lighting configurations can also embed branding into the environment, as long as functional lighting is not compromised.

REQUIRED SPECIFICATIONS

  • Clearances
    • Ensure compliance with Interior Accessibility and Inclusion Checklist and local code. Projects should meet local code in addition what is detailed in the GPS Standards
    • The internal clearances within the room need to accommodate various layouts. Considering project-specific needs and the adaptable nature of the space, design the room with larger dimensions than necessary. For example, furnish it as a medium conference room but allocate the spatial area of a Large Conference Room.
  • Finishes
    • Finishes in DC should be more durable and hardwearing compared to those in corporate spaces
    • These are confidential enclosed spaces intended for group discussions on critical issues, often requiring confidentiality
    • Ensure privacy with opaque film on entry wall glazing

    Walls

    • Wall type 1: gypsum wall to deck with ACT ceiling (or equivalent)
    • Wall type 2: glazing wall with ACT ceiling (or equivalent) at entry wall
    • Single pane 1/4” (0.6cm) tempered glass, clear without green hue. Height to match the door
    • Interior glazing with film not to exceed 8 linear feet
    • 6" (15cm) base, same as adjacent areas for cane detection, from floor
    • Privacy film or interior glazing on entry wall,  provide distraction band or full frosting for privacy and safety  (i.e., can't identify users or read screens, but still be able to see room is occupied)
    • Ensure that monitors, accessories, etc. do not protrude more than 4” (10cm) from the wall
    • Use standard wall types or approved alternate that meets acoustic requirements
    • Gypsum with paint and rubber base  (or equivalent)

    Floors

    • Carpet tile with rubber base (or equivalent)

    Ceiling

    • Suspended ACT (or equivalent)
    • Height not to exceed 10’ (3.1m)

  • Doors
    • Standard size and width based on region
    • Type: Glass panel, swing type
    • Standard door opening based on region, minimum width 32" (81cm)
    • If adjacent to loud spaces, seals at head and jambs, no gaps
  • Furnishings

    Furniture

    • Local teams can substitute alternative furniture arrangements than the typical layout shown above

    Meeting tables

    • Surface top with a low sheen, durable finish
    • Table to include a grommet from floor-mounted power and data centered under the table
    • Consider tables on castor wheels, allowing users to easily change configurations to suit their needs
    • Where possible, provide furniture with dimensional modularity (e.g. tables whose length is twice their width) for ease of combining and reconfiguring
    • Provide ample circulation space around tables

    Seating

    • Typical chairs should be height-adjustable with fixed arms, flexible backs, and casters for carpet

    Writable surface

    • Assess the length of the wall to determine the number of whiteboards it can accommodate, providing a sufficient number of panels based on the room's function
    • Design for use by the full range of body types and from seated to standing heights
    • Project dependent: provide agile whiteboards on castor wheels
    • Install the opposite VC camera
    • Magnetic, steel, white color, matte finish
    • Include tray or cup for markers and erasers
    • Provide 36” (91.5cm) min. clearance around writable surface, mounted at 2’-10” (86cm) above the finished floor

    Window Coverings

    • Roller shades: Manually operable, 3-5% opacity - prevents glare and reduces energy use due to temperature gain and loss
  • Acoustics
    • Ensure soundproofing for privacy and clear communication
    • Noise criteria (NC): 30-35 dBA
    • Sound transmission class (STC): 50-55 dBA
    • When located on shopfloor an enclosed room with ceiling shielding from external processing noise outside is required
  • Equipment
    • See Nike Tech standards
    • Room Scheduler for crisis meetings only, not standard bookings, the room can be reserved for the duration of a crisis
  • Electrical

    Outlets

    • Floor boxes to accommodate power, data at table
    • Provide grommets and access to power within 24" (61cm) from the edge of the table
    • (x1-x2) single gang 120VAC behind the display
    • (x4) network drops to IDF behind display
    • (x1-x2) Display
    • (x1) PDU
    • (x1) Codec
    • (x1-x2) network drop to IDF below table for conference phone
    • Network drop to IDF in ceiling for occupancy sensor
    • OPTIONAL: (x1) network drop to outside wall for schedule panel

    Lighting

    • Lighting and other controls should be mounted between 44”-48” (110cm-122cm) above finished floor
    • Up to 30 FC (323 LUX)
    • User dimmer for interior rooms
    • One lighting type per room, unless noted
    • Diffused downlight or direct/indirect. The light should be even throughout the room to reduce contrast and illuminate faces in various locations
    • Coordinate locations with HVAC
  • Wayfinding
    • See Wayfinding section
    • ID sign with room name
    • Digital scheduling panel
    • Doors: Do not conceal doors
  • Branding
    • These areas typically have little-to-no permanent branding as they are intended as a working/brainstorming space.  Priority should be given to surfaces needed for functional needs like dry-erase boards and pinnable surfaces
    • Consider placement of brand walls/ whiteboards for virtual attendee visibility
    • If branding is needed in these areas, it should be restricted to simple executions such as a custom accent wall color, framed graphic or wallpaper
  • Technology
    • See Nike Tech standards
    • Non-bookable meeting space reserved for critical, time-sensitive meetings
    • Consider digital displays for real-time data monitoring for efficient communication and response during crises
    • Ensure flexibility for hybrid and in-person meetings, with attention to sound quality
    • Embed technology in the ceiling for flexibility with room layout (moveable furniture etc.)
  • Safety and Security
    • For Workplace Security standards, contact your local Design or PM team. EHS standards can be found in Resources
