DISTRIBUTION CENTERS

OVERVIEW

A designated place for secure bike parking and other bike maintenance amenities to support cross-campus and to-campus cycling.

Design Goals

  • Locate near building entrance/reception area, considering proximity to changeroom and locker facilities
  • Provide a safe, secure, and convenient location for bikes to be temporarily stored throughout the day
  • Facility should be welcoming, accessible, and safe for everyone
  • Integrate the bike storage design with the surrounding landscape and architecture 
  • Determine bike space needs based on headcount and future demand, refer to Ratios

REQUIRED SPECIFICATIONS

  • Clearances
    • Recommended aisle widths are 4'-11" (1.5m) for single-tier racks and 5'-11" - 6'-7" (1.8 - 2m) for two-tier systems
    • Provision should be made for accessible bike parking spaces
  • Finishes
    • Use materials that are durable and weather-resistant
  • Furnishing
    • Storage space should be sheltered with overhead covering from wind, sun or inclement weather
  • Equipment
    • Include repair station with appropriate tools/pumps
    • Two-tier systems need minimum ceiling height of 8'-6'' (2.6m) and gas-assisted lifting systems for safety
    • Include variety of stands and racks to accommodate different bike types
    • Include trash cans and recycling bins
  • Electrical
    • Evaluate and install charging points for electric bikes if relevant for facility
  • Wayfinding
    • Line of sight or directional signs to the building(s) entrance(s) along an accessible route (particularly at key intersections/decision points) 
    • Ensure intuitive navigation
  • Safety and Security
    • Bikes storage should be secured within rack spaces, either fixed to a permanent structure or part of a locked structure
    • Non-slip surface in and around space for safety in wet conditions and specialist cycling shoes
    • Provide sufficient lighting in low light conditions
    • Install security cameras or other surveillance measures
  • Sustainability
