Why Events standards are important

At Nike, Events are a tool used to inspire, empower, inform, and celebrate individuals and teams. Events play a significant role in expressing Nike's brand identity, communicating business strategy and providing social opportunities for community development.


The Event Standards aim to unite shop floor and corporate employees within Nike's Distribution Center environments by delivering a consistently high level of event activations that focus on meeting the needs and requirements of Distribution Center shift work.

HOW

Process of curating Events

In Distribution Centers the curation of events that are meaningful and of interest to both employees and the business. To achieve this, employees and leaders must be involved in the event curation process.


The following steps are a guideline for the users of these standards to achieve an integrated event curation that captures the voice of employees and the business.

As part of this process of curating events, the following considerations must be taken into account:

Consult with all relevant partners Engage with leaders and other cross- functional partners during the curation of events to achieve relevance.
Permission Work alongside leaders to foster a culture that grants permission to participate.
Timing Align events with employees' shift and break time to enable participation.
Partnerships Build a base of trusted local (when possible) partners / agencies that meet Nike legal standards to drive executions when needed.
Sustainability When designing event collateral (i.e. banners)

Events Types

In a Distribution Center we are supporting three event types: Brand, Business and Social.


These event types capture and elevate the different facets of what drives success for both the business and employees, with all event types combining to result in a more engaged and productive Shopfloor.



Brand

Events that connect to the mission, values, and identity of Nike as a broader organization - 'only at Nike'

Business

Events that supports the delivery and celebration of critical business priorities relevant to Supply Chain / each specific Distribution Center

Social

Events that foster a sense of community and culture, build meaningful relationships and drive employee belonging

WHAT

Guidance for Distribution Center Events

The below standards have been developed to guide decision-making when curating events for Distribution Centers.


These standards target areas to provide global consistency, however, we recommend that local teams

assess specific event needs and where required and tailor outcomes to suit the local context.

  • One Annual Distribution Center-wide sports tournament connected to a global sport moment

Business

Events that supports the delivery and celebration of critical business priorities relevant to Supply Chain / each specific Distribution Center

  • Connect employee with Supply Chain's business strategy (priorities, goals and objectives)
  • Connect employees with Distribution Center leaders
  • Recognize and celebrate employees contributions and successes

Provide 2 x in-person business updates per year:

  • Start of FY to communicate business strategy + goals
  • End of FY update to communicate progress and achievements


If resources allow consider:

  • 1-2x mid-FY progress/'temperature check' updates through a virtual platform

Social

Events that foster a sense of community, build meaningful relationships and drive athlete belonging

  • Build inter-team + cross-team relationships
  • Educate and celebrate relevant cultural + religious milestones/traditions
  • Activate and energize the Distribution Center
  • Deliver informal moments for sport and play
  • Aim to deliver smaller, more regular cultural/social events.
  • Events should be relevant to cultural preferences of location.
  • Partner with United Networks when applicable
  • Events should link with sport when relevant

Access

  • Means of Entry/Involvement

    Timing:

    Events should accommodate different shift types/times:

    • Day and night 
    • Weekday and weekend

    Example: in-person events will require multiple sessions to accommodate shift work.


    Diversity:

    Events should be varied to support an array of demographics and participation types:

    • Age 
    • Body size
    • Culture / religion 
    • Disabilities 
    • Languages 
    • Learning styles Preferences
    • Situational/temporary conditions
    • Active participation vs. spectatorship

    Accessibility:

    Accessibility of in-person events should be considered for mobility restrictions.

    Registration:

    Ensure registration platform is accessible for all (including contracted employees) + easy to use.


    Virtual:

    Include a zoom link for all in-person events as a secondary option for those unable to attend and ensure content is appropriate for hybrid video/sound.

Communications

  • Delivery of Information

    1 month before the event 

    Prepare communications strategy for the event, choosing most appropriate delivery platform*.


    *Consider platform accessibility for all (both analogue and digital) as well as leadership advocacy to support comms.


    2-3 weeks before the event

    Issue communications (with zoom links if hybrid / virtual) to build anticipation and excitement. Suggested content for communications include:

    • Event name 
    • Event description
    • Timing (date + time) 
    • How to register
    • Time period for accessibility requests + point of contact

    Anticipate FAQs and clarify practicalities, for example:

    • Who is invited?
    • Can I bring my family? 
    • What can I expect?
    • What do I need to bring? 
    • Is the event 'Nike Time' or 'Free Time'?

    During the event

    • Provide clear signage and wayfinding in local/language(s).
    • Provide link/QR code to feedback form.

    After the event

    Provide of a post-event capture of key information communicated at event. Example: email summary, digital screen content.

    Issue recording of any live talks / business updates, with closed captioning for inclusion to all.

Op. Excellence

    Feedback loop

    Implement employee and leadership feedback platforms to measure satisfaction and ROI.


    Example:

    • Feedback via employee app/primary platform.
    • 'Happy or not' stands present at events.
    • Post-event workshops with leaders.

     

    Measure

    Analyze feedback to understand each events success and improvement opportunities for the future.


    Budget adherence

    Event planning against annual event budget at beginning of each financial year.


    Event process

    Ensure GPS team follow suggested event curation process highlighted above to allow for participatory event design.


    Event content

    Refer to Accessible & Inclusive Events at Nike standards to ensure foundational DE&I requirements for event content communication are addressed, particularly when designing hybrid events.


Spatial

  • Event Space Requirements

    When creating temporary spatial changes, all design solutions must accommodate the following DE&I, flexibility, safety and sustainability considerations:


    Entry

    Adhere to standard entry, egress, safety, and emergency requirements.

    • Accessible main entrance without steps.
    • Entry doors that are easy to open with min. 26" (910mm); revolving doors cannot be the only option.

    Presentation layout 

    • Min 36" (910mm) wide aisleways without stairs or steps .
    • Ramp for presentation stage (if applicable).
    • Clear sight lines for interpreters and signers; raised and lit if necessary.
    • Offer seating for attendees (to support employees being on their feet all day).
    • Offer seating for attendees with disabilities in multiple locations.
    • Comfortable seating for various body types.

    General 

    • Min 36" (910mm) wide walkways throughout.
    • Stairs must not be required to get to event spaces, restrooms or amenities.
    • Audible and visual signals required in halls, corridors, gathering areas, restrooms.
    • Glass walls and doors to have graphics for visibility.
    • Any food and drink tables/registration desks to have an accessible section with max. height 36" (910mm).
    • Slip resistant flooring throughout.
