MEDICAL ROOM

DISTRIBUTION CENTERS

OVERVIEW

A Medical Room is a private space equipped to handle minor injuries. Initial support is provided by a designed employee with first aid training.

In case of emergencies, outside emergency medical help will transfer patients from this room to an ambulance. Ensure compliance with local code requirements.

Design Goals

  • Close proximity to the Shopfloor for quick access given the extensive Material Handling Equipment (MHE) in operation
  • Situate the room near the Entrance and primary circulation routes to ensure easy access
  • Facilitate direct access for external medical professionals, requiring a clear route from the room to the ambulance through the entrance
  • In larger facilities like a campus, larger and more numerous medical spaces may be required

Area: Approximately 168 SF (16 SM)

Size: 17’ - 0 1/2" x 9’ - 10" (5.2m x 3.0m) min.

Capacity: Dependent on project, team size, and number of teams on Shopfloor.

REQUIRED SPECIFICATIONS

  • Clearances
    • Ensure wheelchair turning radius and accessible door clearances are met in both sink and lounge areas. 60” (152cm) is the minimum turning circle clearance, but 75” (190.5cm) is better for all mobility device users when possible
  • Finishes
    • Prioritize sanitary finishes for ease of maintenance

    Walls

    • Wall type 8: Gypsum wall below deck
    • Use standard wall types or approved alternate that meet acoustic requirements
    • Paint and rubber base (or equivalent)
    • Accent color on all walls is typical. Choose paint color with furniture and brand in mind
    • Must provide privacy film and/or window coverings

    Floors

    • Cleanable flooring for wet locations required at the sink
    • Select flooring with inherent slip-resistance properties or specify one with applied slip-resistant treatment
    • Check local standards for the need for resilient cove to match flooring or wall materials

    Ceiling

    • Height: 8’-10’ (2.4m-3.1m)
    • Avoid suspended ceiling tiles; opt for gypsum board ceilings with lockable hatches (prevent storage of goods in the ceiling)
  • Doors
    • Standard size door
    • Type: solid with vision panel, swing
    • Standard door opening based on region, minimum width 32" (81cm)
    • Handle: Lever or u-shape that can be opened with a fist or loosely gripped
    • Lock: Deadbolt with occupancy indicator. Coordinate with security. Vacancy/No vacancy lock on exterior door
    • When project requires a stretcher (mobile bed), door must be wide enough to allow stretcher to pass through opening
  • Furnishings

    Furniture

    • Height adjustable medical bed and reclining chair
    • Provide additional ergonomic seating

  • Casework and Plumbing
    • Laminate counter with exposed plywood or laminate cabinets
    • Counter and storage cubbies at the sink
    • Ensure accessible height for all devices and furniture, and front approach clearances for all casework
    • Drop-in sink, side-mounted faucet, no sensor
  • Acoustics
    • Noise should be dampened between the room and adjacent spaces
    • Noise criteria (NC): 30-35 dBA
    • Sound transmission class (STC): 45-50 dBA
  • Equipment
    • At sink area include: soap dispenser, mirror, trash bin, paper towel dispenser, sharps bin, first aid kit
    • In sink area include: tack or magnet board, basket for wipes, tissues, supplies
    • Under counter refrigerator and lockable storage for medicines
    • Ensure all equipment required for small / medium medical emergencies is available
    • Life Safety: Defibrillators, First Aid cabinets, sharps disposal container, fire extinguishers and fire and smoke detection and notification systems located throughout the space
    • Waste segregation bins should be in place including those for medical waste and disposal as per the local law requirements

  • Mechanical System
    • HVAC: Include temperature/ventilation. Avoid drafts directly over seats

  • Electrical

    Outlets

    • Wall outlets at accessible heights above and below counter at the sink

    Lighting

    • Range: 20-40 FC (215-430 LUX) at 30” above the floor
    • Controls: Daylight harvesting or user dimmable
  • Wayfinding
    • See Wayfinding section
    • ID sign with ‘Medical Room’ outside the door
    • Amenity Icon Tab
    • Dependent on door lock, allow for occupancy signage
  • Branding
    • Framed poster, placed so it is visible with furniture, casework, and/or curtain
    • Accent paint background - specify with architectural finishes. Select a soft, calming color within room to support calmness of space
