PLANNING ADJACENCIES

DISTRIBUTION CENTERS

OVERVIEW

The spatial relationships within a Distribution Center are critical to security, flexibility, and operational efficiency. The strategy on this page outlines a consistent approach, recognizing that each Nike Distribution Center is different. Project teams will tailor the solutions for the site context, scale, and unique functional requirements.

Security Access

Due to the product volume and potential for inventory loss, Nike security teams operate within strict parameters across all locations. Some high-security sites may require additional measures for safety or high value items. Project teams must partner with Nike Resilience for local requirements and specifications.

The security approach should aim to:

  • Create a layered approach to access control; delineating public and secure, Corporate and Shopfloor, coach and employee, etc.
  • Reduce the perception of security as a hinderance by prioritizing a swift, seamless, and pleasant entry process for all users.
  • Maintain a level of flexibility to adapt to new concerns and evolving threat levels.
  • Utilize a visitor management system to control and monitor guest access.

Security layering and components:

Layer 1

Property Line / Exterior Spaces

  • Fencing
  • Cameras
  • Guard patrols
  • Intercom or Gatehouse
  • Badge access automobile gate

Layer 2

Building Entry / Public Spaces

  • Badge access doors
  • Cameras
  • Guard on duty
  • Security Office
  • Adhoc security sensors

Layer 3

Interior Secure Spaces

Effectively designing and supporting the movement of people and goods.

Overall

Space type locations and adjacencies should be planned to:

- Sequence the arrival for appropriate security access

- Optimize traffic patterns for large numbers of employees entering and exiting at shift changes

- Provide equitable access to central shared spaces for Shopfloor and office employees

- Locate necessary spaces near the Shopfloor to minimize walking distances

Property Line / Exterior spaces

Users often pass a Gatehouse security checkpoint to enter the Nike facility or parking lot. Some sites may include exterior amenities near the Building Entry.

Public Space

High-traffic arrive and depart area. Reception and security are here as a first point of contact.

Secure space

Employees and guests (with temporary badge access) pass through security turnstiles to enter the Shared Spaces, Office, and Shopfloor.

Walking Distance

The space types below should be centrally located. Some space types may need to be included in the Shared Spaces and Shopfloor to ensure quick access for shift employees within the walking times listed below. Shift employees are prioritized because they have rigid break schedules, unlike office employees.

Arrive & Depart

Arrive and Depart spaces are located before the secure perimeter for public access This includes a Lobby with reception and security desk, at least on Meeting Room for guests that doesn't require badge access, and an Everybody Restroom. This is a high-traffic area, with peaks at shift changes. Ample circulation and space for cues at security are important considerations for efficiency.

Shared Spaces

Shared Spaces are located inside the secure perimeter, located for easy access for Shopfloor and Office employees. Within the Shared Spaces, there should be a central zone that includes high-activity spaces such as the Foodhall, Performance Bar, lockers, sport amenities, etc. The primary circulation route should pass through the central zone to open sightlines and enhance activation and buzz. More discreet entry locations are preferred for Mothers', Wellness, and Multi-Faith rooms.

Shopfloor Spaces

The Distribution Center Shopfloor typically refers to the physical area where the actual handling, sorting, packing, and shipping of Nike product takes place. Shopfloor standard spaces support the employees working in this area and include Coach Flex Desks, Coach Focus Room, Breakroom, Freeplay and Recovery zone. All Shopfloor spaces are within the secure zone. Collaboration required with Supply Chain teams on the location of Shopfloor space types.
