RESTROOM & SHOWER

CORPORATE OFFICES & DISTRIBUTION CENTERS

OVERVIEW

Accessible and inclusive for everybody.

Nike’s offices reflect that we value diversity in all our locations. We strive to provide a balance of restroom choices that are inclusive and convenient for all employees and guests, including at our leased sites. The addition of a single-user everybody restroom is in the cost guardrails. Additional funding is required to renovate restrooms beyond that scope.

The name Everybody has been developed with the Pride and Disability networks to indicate restrooms that are all-gender and accessible. It is a nod to Bill Bowerman’s quote “if you have a body, you are an athlete*”.

Inclusive Restrooms

Design Goals

  • Re-use existing restroom locations or locate near the existing plumbing core. Locate near the custodial closet if possible.
  • Everybody restrooms can be single-user or multi-stall. Distribute choices (single-user vs. multi-stall, Everybody vs. gendered) throughout the building for easy access, while using consistent locations for easy wayfinding.
  • Provide direct access to Everybody restrooms (NOT through a gendered space, area with restricted access, etc.).
  • Multi-stall Everybody restrooms: The entrance to the shared space should be open with no door. Full-height walls and locked doors separate toilet stalls.
  • For privacy, shield line of sight into restrooms from adjacent spaces.
  • The restroom design should use functional, durable materials; keep the aesthetic clean and timeless.
  • Allow enough space for someone providing assistance to the user in accessible and Everybody restrooms.
  • Music in multi-user restrooms adds ambiance while masking restroom noises.
  • If showers are provided, include an all-gender, accessible option; this can be combined with a single-user restroom.
  • DC’s should have primarily male and female multi-stall restrooms. Include at least one single-user Everybody restroom with each male/female restroom group.

Smart Material Selection

Off the shelf tile colors and custom scatter configuration adds interest without significant cost. A custom color finish on the washing station ties the palette together and gives unexpected freshness to a functional component of the space. Artful linear lighting suggests a running track oval, picking up the language of sport in a subtle way.

Keep it Simple

A basic but meaningful graphic wall paint adds an elevated touch without completely covering the architectural palette.

Single-User Everybody Restroom
Everybody means the room is fully accessible and all-gender. This room includes a roll-in shower with seat, grab bars, turning radius clearance, and amenities within reach range. This single-user model is often built where existing facilities don’t include showers or all-gender options.
