Branding

Support active play in Freeplay areas with big, bold branding moments that complement the space's scale. Branding should serve as a visual beacon, connected to the Shopfloor, and encourage use by nearby employees. To accommodate changing DC racking arrangements, apply branding strategically to ensure it remains legible and flexible.

Consider using paint applications for wall graphics, which are easy to maintain, and artfully configuring functional lighting to create energy. If possible, collaborate with local artists to create wall graphics or murals that deeply connect with team culture.

REQUIRED SPECIFICATION

  • Clearances
    • Circulation should be 36” (91.5cm) min. wide
    • 48" (120cm) clear path between edges and walls where sports equipment will be placed
    • In all other areas, a circulation width of 36" (91.5cm). May be reduced to 32" (81.5cm) for lengths not exceeding 48" (120cm)
    • Furniture is not blocking the path of travel for people with mobility devices or people with low vision
    • Ensure accessible height for all equipment, furniture, and front approach clearances
    • For someone in a wheelchair who may have low vision, consider clearances, reach, and use clear signage for ease of use.
  • Finishes
    • When these spaces are located on the Shopfloor (near the Breakroom or Coach Zone), minimal fitout works to ceiling and floor required.
  • Acoustics
    • Space feels energetic and encourages conversations. Noise shouldn’t be a distraction to adjacent workstations
  • Electrical

    Lighting

    • 20-35 FC (215-375 LUX) at 30” (76cm) above finished floor – a lower overall level, with lamps for individual adjustment

  • Wayfinding
    • See Wayfinding section
    • Amenity Icon Tab only if the location is not obvious along the circulation path at a distance
    • Often a good opportunity for placemaking
  • Branding
    • Brand on areas of the Shopfloor should be big and bold to complement the scale of the facility, and combat visual clutter
    • Wall graphics are typically paint applications, which are easier and more affordable to maintain than wallcoverings
    • Consideration should be made if freeplay is on the open shopfloor, regarding the ongoing rearrangement of DC racking. If space is moved, the graphic should still function if partially covered.
  • Technology
    • OPTIONAL: Consider implementing digital scoring management if the budget allows
    • OPTIONAL: Consider implementing speakers within Freeplay area for employees to play music during Freeplay sessions and heighten energy/buzz
  • Safety and Security
    • For Workplace Security standards, contact your local Design or PM team. EHS standards can be found in Resources
    • When installing basketball hoops on the Shopfloor, consider adding a net to prevent basketballs from hitting mechanical and fire service equipment.
