BreakRoom

DISTRIBUTION CENTERS

OVERVIEW

The Breakroom is a support space for Shopfloor workers that exists in addition to a main Foodhall. The Breakroom is a break area where Shopfloor workers go for short moments of rest or refreshment and has access to quick food options, storage for personal food, and equipped with reheat facilities.

See Ratio standards to determine quantity needed in each facility.

Design Goals

  • Locate the Breakroom adjacent to the Shopfloor to prioritize access for all Shopfloor employees
  • Locate near amenities like Shopfloor Restrooms, Freeplay space, and high foot traffic zones for optimal usage
  • This space is in addition to the Foodhall - don’t place these spaces too close together
  • Support Breakroom design by dispersed Hydration Stations (water points with ice) across the Shopfloor
  • Locate away from noisy areas as much as possible. Prioritize an enclosed space for the Breakroom to escape the noise of the Shopfloor.
  • Counters should provide enough space to accommodate filtered water, coffee machines, and tea facilities
  • Provide sufficient storage and heating options for personal food items
  • Design flexible seating arrangements to support various group sizes and promote social interactions (multiple teams may break at the same time)
  • Arrange furniture to foster casual interactions and encourage conversations among employees
  • Maximize access to natural light and connection to outdoor spaces.

Branding

This informal, high-energy space benefits from dynamic branding that is rooted in Nike stories with particular relevance to local sport culture. Branding follows similar thinking to Hub, Fuel Station or Food Hall, where brand applications can be more expressive and less literal. As a functional space with a high density of appliances, apply branding with careful consideration to alignments and obstructions. Brand elements should not block or confuse informational signage. Durable, environmentally-responsible materials and finishes will help lengthen the lifespan of brand graphics and paint treatment.

Opportunities

  • In some cases, Wayfinding signage can be customized to integrate Brand aesthetic with key information. For example, consider font choice or design as an element of brand expression. Or use color to code information and to create zones.
  • Wall graphics can be a cost-effective way to activate large expanses of bare wall. Abstracted Nike shapes and patterns can add Brand connectivity and visual interest even if partially obstructed by fixtures, furniture and architecture.
  • If project parameters allow, carrying brand graphics onto the floor can convey of sense of commitment to the space and to the athletes* using it.
  • Where available, configuring functional lighting to reference Brand stories can deliver energy and impact in a way that embeds storytelling in the environment.
