DISTRIBUTION CENTERS

OVERVIEW

An Outdoor Sports Court is an outdoor multi-purpose space used for Sport and event execution.  This is an optional space, meaning the local team will determine if it is required.


Design Goals

  • Located near main building entrance area
  • Create a court that serves a variety of sports types - ‘something for everyone’
  • Primary entrances should provide equal access for everyone into the court, regardless of ability
  • Consider factors such as sunlight exposure, shade, wind direction, and proximity to amenities like changing rooms

REQUIRED SPECIFICATIONS

  • Finishes
    • Select suitable material for sport court (asphalt, concrete, acrylic, synthetic turf) 
    • Design for durability and ease of maintenance
    • Consider thickness of surface material, ease of repairs, and cleaning
  • Court Design
    • Identify primary sports or activities to inform size, layout, and surface requirements
    • Provide marking lines for specific sport types with clear visibility and accuracy (multiple lines to support the occurrence of multiple sports)
  • Furnishings

    Provide spectator seating with sufficient sightlines and protection from weather

    • Provide water fountains
  • Storage
    • Locate sports storage for shared sports and event supplies and equipment, adjacent or in the vicinity of sports facilities
    • Ensure sufficient size to store required sports equipment
    • Provide adequate security for high-value items
    • Outdoor court storage must be weatherproof and accessible from the court
  • Equipment
    • Provide adjustable and accessible equipment and other universal design features to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities
  • Electrical

    Lighting

    • Choose fixtures with appropriate brightness and beam angles for optimal visibility and glare reduction
    • Ensure uniform lighting coverage for the entire playing area
    • Use high-intensity, weather-resistant LED fixtures suitable for outdoor conditions
  • Wayfinding
    • Ensure intuitive navigation
    • Line of sight or directional signs to the building(s) entrance(s) along an accessible route (particularly at key intersections/decision points)
  • Branding
    • Any court branding should prioritize the functionality of the court while integrating brand elements
    • Installer expertise should be leveraged to ensure the longevity of any installed graphics and to ensure compatibility with the local environment
    • Storytelling should lean on concepts that are evergreen in an attempt to extend the lifespan of the execution

  • Safety and Security
    • Non-slip surfaces and maintain clear pathways for spectator movement
    • Provide sufficient lighting in low-light conditions
    • Incorporate appropriate safety features for sport type (i.e. impact-absorbing surfaces, fencing/barriers)
    • Provide adequate drainage systems
  • Sustainability
    • Incorporate eco-friendly design elements (i.e., permeable surfaces, native landscaping, energy-efficient lighting)
