Sign Family

Navigation Signs

These should be consistent between sites, following the Standard templates. Includes identification signs, directional signs, directory signs, and maps.

Regulatory and Information Signs

These are part of the cohesive branded sign package but aren’t directly related to wayfinding. They provide information for regulatory/safety, brand installations, instructions, or temporary circumstances. These can vary by site. Templates can be adjusted but Standard fonts and icons should be used.

Confirm local code requirements. Additional signs or modifications may be necessary. See specification sheets and templates for requirements.

Sign Placement

The specification sheets list each location where the signs should be installed. General guidance:

  • The right number and placement of signs is important. Too few will leave users feeling abandoned. Too many can cause clutter and confusion. The more complex the building is, the more signs will be needed.
  • If the team needs a map in a location for move-in, it's likely a location that needs a permanent map.
  • Primary routes should be the location for most signs, including maps at arrival points, directional signs at decision points, and identification signs at destinations. Secondary routes should have fewer signs - typically only identification signs to mark destinations.
  • Confirm the orientation of signs with arrows to ensure they are pointing in the correct direction.
  • Ensure the signs are visible and not obscured by furniture, etc.
