WATER - LEVEL 1

Water Fixtures

  • Comply with LEED prerequisite Indoor Water Use Reduction.
  • Pursue LEED credit Indoor Water Use Reduction.
  • Perform an indoor water reduction calculation using the LEED v4 Indoor Water Use Reduction Calculator with the proposed or existing plumbing fixture flow/flush rates to confirm that at least a 30% water use reduction is being achieved over the LEED baseline.
  • The following flow/flush rates are recommended:
  • 0.35 gpm (1.33 lpm) lavatories
  • 1.5 gpm (5.67 lpm) showers
  • 1.1 gpf (4.16 lpm) toilets/water closets
  • 0.128 gpf (0.48 lpm) urinals
  • Ensure that all applicable fixtures* are WaterSense labeled.

NOTE: LEED water credits should be carefully reviewed against local water regulations.

* All faucets and fixtures except public lavatory and service faucets

** Or local equivalent to WaterSense

Water Metering

  • Comply with LEED prerequisite Building-Level Water Metering.
  • Provide at least one building level water meter that measures the total potable water for the building and associated grounds. Ensure that the meter is connected to the Campus Water Metering platform (e.g. AquaCue) where possible.
  • Connect with your Sustainability Director to report monthly water use data to GPS for tracking towards targets.

OPTIONAL: Sub-Metering

  • Comply with LEED credit Water Metering.
  • Provide permanent water meters for at least two of the following systems:
  • Domestic Hot Water
  • Indoor plumbing fixtures and fittings
  • Irrigation
  • Boiler
  • Reclaimed water
  • Other process water

Outdoor Water Use

  • Comply with LEED prerequisite Outdoor Water Use Reduction.
  • Pursue LEED credit Outdoor Water Use Reduction where possible.
  • For projects that have any outdoor space and irrigation within their scope, perform outdoor water reduction calculations using the LEED v4 Outdoor Water Use Reduction Calculator and demonstrate at least a 50% reduction in outdoor water use.

Appliances

  • Ensure that all dishwashers and ice machines are ENERGY STAR rated, or local equivalent.

Process Water Systems

  • Ensure that cooling towers, evaporative condensers, and heat rejection and cooling meet the LEED credit Indoor Water Use Reduction requirements.

OPTIONAL: Water Reuse

  • Utilize rainwater harvesting or grey water system for irrigation or non-potable water fixture use.
